Single-Phase Electric Motors in Daily Life and Small-Scale Production

In daily life and small-scale production in Vietnam, single-phase electric motors (also known as single-phase motors) are the most commonly used type of motor. However, not everyone fully understands their structure, operating principles, or how to choose a durable and energy-efficient motor.

1. What Is a Single-Phase Electric Motor?

A single-phase electric motor is a motor whose stator winding consists of only one phase winding. It operates using a single-phase AC power supply, which includes one live wire and one neutral wire.

In Vietnam, single-phase motors are designed to operate on the standard residential power supply of 220V – 50Hz.

Due to the characteristics of household electricity, this type of motor usually has small to medium power output (typically under 3 kW or 4 HP), making it suitable for applications that do not require high starting torque.

2. Basic Structure of a Single-Phase Motor

Basically, a single-phase electric motor consists of two main parts:

  • Stator (stationary part): Includes the motor housing (usually made of aluminum or cast iron), electrical steel core, and windings.

  • Rotor (rotating part): A cylindrical rotating component inside the motor that transmits motion to the output shaft.

In addition, the biggest difference between a single-phase motor and a three-phase motor is the presence of a capacitor and a centrifugal switch. Since the magnetic field generated by single-phase current cannot rotate by itself, the capacitor creates a phase shift that allows the motor to start.

3. Practical Applications

Thanks to its convenience (directly plugging into household power outlets), single-phase motors are widely used:

  • In households: Domestic water pumps, washing machines, refrigerators, electric fans, air conditioners.

  • In agriculture: Rice milling machines, banana slicers, irrigation water pumps.

  • In small industries: Bench drilling machines, small air compressors, light-duty conveyor systems, mini concrete mixers.

4. Why Choose VTC Cast-Iron Single-Phase Electric Motors?

There are many motor brands available on the market today, but VTC (Vinh Thuan Co.) cast-iron single-phase motors remain a top choice for distributors and consumers due to their outstanding advantages:

High mechanical durability (Cast-Iron Housing)
Unlike lightweight aluminum housings, VTC motors use one-piece cast-iron housings, which withstand strong impacts and vibrations, ensuring stable operation in harsh environments.

Excellent cooling, smooth operation
Scientifically designed cooling fins combined with cast iron material allow efficient heat dissipation, preventing overheating during continuous operation and extending the lifespan of internal windings.

True rated power, high-quality copper windings
VTC guarantees motors deliver their true rated power. High-temperature-resistant copper windings ensure good load capacity and minimize the risk of short circuits or burnout.

Wide range of power ratings
We offer a full range of power options to meet various needs: 0.5 HP, 1 HP, 2 HP, up to 3 HP, suitable for applications from household water pumps to small production machinery.
